You Never Know Whats Just Around The Corner

Not very often do I get to work in Ayrshire so it’s been a great month for me working near to home, but I didn’t realise this shoot was going to be just around the corner from me.

Photo from Lauren's portfolio

Lauren Jamieson is a young and upcoming Glasgow model who was wanting to add new images to her portfolio, she already had the her photographer booked and all she needed was a hairdresser and MUA I asked her if she would mind if I worked with my MUA and she said she already had someone in mind, so things were made much easier when we found out it was the same person Stephanie Kerr of Peaches & Paint . I hadn’t worked with the photographer Tom Cairns before but I had noticed his work, on the website of my favourite wedding accessories designer Corrine Smith, great images showing off Corrine’s designs to the maximum.

I didn’t realise Tommy’s place was just around the corner for me, well may 2 or 3 corners but five minutes from my place, you just never know what's around the corner as the old saying goes.

Lauren was more than happy to leave us to the styling for the shoot with only one look in mind she wanted an all American young preppy look, which is bang on trend and can be found in every high street store. Lauren wanted to go for more fashion looks; I always like to give models something different for their portfolio as that’s what they are looking for different images so they can show their versatility.

Trendy Preppy Ponytail

Why don’t you try this easy style that has a great effect, I had to straighten Lauren’s naturally curly hair for a sleek smooth texture, then putting a little height through the top and pulling & smoothing back into a sleek pony just above the ears and fasten, pulling another pony tail just below to contact up with the first ponytail and the look is done.

Stephanie wanted to go for a natural look with the makeup and suggested to Lauren a big woolly jumper and her hair curly, as Lauren has a young fresh look, I thought I would funk it up a bit with 1970’s retro feel afro frizz, softening it up with the young and fresh looking pink makeup for a natural look.  The jumper is mine and about four sizes too big for Lauren but this was the look we were going  for a big junky knit that was more like a dress than jumper a bargain from Primark at £20 we teamed it up some girl power leopard print wedge ankle boots from Very.co.uk

Again we still haven’t got a loan from any designers we are still on the lookout but we have our eye set on the prize and want to wait for the right one to give us their designs to work with.

For now we have my collection of some clothes and bits and pieces I have picked up which I knew would look good for the final look, I had this look in mind for a while and you can use this style in so many ways, it has a real rock and roll feel!

Lauren is truly wearing a retro shirt from Miss Sixty that I have had for about 20yrs. at least maybe longer? I love this shirt it’s a forever in style military shirt with badges and embroidery a totaly unique shirt from Miss Sixty, leopard print top to team up with the wedges again and Lauren own shorts giving a very wearable young funky look.

I always research for all my shoots, I like to turn up knowing what everyone's vision is so we can all work together in achieving the look, this is why I Loved working on the styling and so want to do more of it, if I had more tools just think of the looks me and Stephanie could come up with… Come on designer let me have your stuff lol

I work better under pressure and there is a lot to do and remember on the day of the shoot, hard work, I collected Lauren off the train at 9:30am and didn’t drop her off at the train station until 8:30pm a long day but they always go in so quickly, a great enjoyable day, a big thank you to Tommy for feeding us all day and getting us in some cakes….. mmmm…. It’s a running theme on my shoots ‘CAKES’

My favourite image of the day this style is been in my head for a while it’s so good to see it come to light and it’s just perfect for Lauren.

Glasgow’s Thistle Hotel.
Face of Glasgow .

Inner beauty definitely shines through and that’s never truer than when you’re speaking about this year’s Face of Glasgow winner Jade Leigh Hunt. A true stunner and her warm heart and fantastic sense of humour shines through.

Lesley starts setting Jade's hair
George from Monapics.com has already worked with Jade on photo shoots and asked myself and Stephanie from Peaches and Paint to work on the shoot with Jade. We were going for a full day outdoor shoot. Normally September is a great month for sunshine and amazing colours with the change of season on its way, but this September is been one of the wettest miserable September I have ever known, in typical Scottish style the rain was coming down in buckets that morning, but cleared in the afternoon just in time for our shoot.

Stephanie starts off Jade's makeup

Stephanie working her magic

Watch our behind the scenes video of us getting ready and you will see me in the background making some of my homemade chicken soup, and a lovely comforting coconut cake for our lunch, you always get a feed at my house, especially on a miserable day, one thing us Scottish do well is a good feed.  Click here for video

Some finsihing touches

With Jade’s makeup and hair finished, it's time to head out to Dean Castle Park, I am sure a few heads will be turned when out on location, Jade is looking stunning.

Some final final touches

To flow with her dress the hair was dressed with lots of tumbling curls left to fall naturally on the face, the makeup bringing out the colours in the stunning flesh and sliver sequined floor length fishtail evening dress, with the sequins resembling sparkling scales giving a true mermaid feel.

The venue for the day was in the stunning Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.
Dean Castle is situated in the Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland.

It was the stronghold for the Boyd Family, who were lords of Kilmarnock for over 400 years. The Castle takes its name from ‘The Dean’ or wooded valley, a common place name in Scotland.

Dean castle and Country Park is maintained by East Ayrshire Council and is free to access. There are daily tours of the castle which are also free. The private chamber of the Earls of Kilmarnock has a complete model of the castle. Legend has it that after the 4th Earl of Kilmarnock was beheaded for treason in London on 18 August 1746 his head was carried back to Dean castle and was stored in a large chest which is still present in the Laigh Tower. The story of the 4th Earl’s head being kept in the castle has attracted many ghost hunters who have studied the castle and believe there is a presence in the palace. A large bust of William Wallace is on display on the ground floor of the palace.

The second look of the day jade was wanting a retro look to add to her portfolio and when myself and Stephanie first looked at jades portfolio images to find out what would suit her best the one thing that stood out for us both was the fantastic look she had for the timeless classic and very much on trend just now, the ultra-glam 1950’s style of Victory Rolls and beauty spots.

A rose the prefect accessory from the garden

Jade added to the look of her outfit with red accessories to bring a modern twist to a vintage style.

Had a another very successful day with the dream team, George M Monaghan (photographer) Monapics.com , Stephanie Kerr (Makeup Artist) Peach & Paint and myself Lesley D Docherty (Hair stylist) Head Strong Solutions.

The Gatehouse at Dean Castle
The present Gatehouse was entirely built in 1935-6. It was never present in the original castle. However it is carefully copied from real sixteenth-century buildings, including details like the windows with half-wooden shutters and half-leaded glass. The overall design and decorative but usable gun loops are copied from the gatehouse built at Tolquhon Castle, Aberdeenshire built in the 1580s. The wooden walkway around the wall guarding the palace was added in the restoration. In 1975 the 9th Lord Howard de Walden gifted the castle, estate, his father’s collections of arms and armour, and his grandfather’s collection of musical instruments to the people of Kilmarnock.

The second I looked at Jades portfolio the 1940/50’s style just jumped out at me that jade would so suit, I don’t think I have ever got a style so right, this look is amazing on Jade, taking us straight back in the past but with softness and long length brings it bang up to date.

We finished our working day at 8pm with George shooting off for another shoot, Stephanie was in a rush to make her Friday night clients and Jade had to get to another modelling job in Glasgow and would working till 1am the next morning, so they all got packed off with some chicken soup and a slice of cake to have when they finished work…  Best thing of working at home is when you finish you’re already at home, got my feet up with a cup of tea, slice of cake and some TV…. Bliss

OMG How brilliant is this photo … I love it
