Year of Creative Scotland 2012

Year of Creative Scotland 2012 - Is the beginning of an exciting programme that will embrace London 2012 and celebrate Glasgow 2014. It's a chance to spotlight, celebrate and promote Scotland’s cultural and creative strengths on a world stage, and to position Scotland as one of the world’s most creative nations to audiences at home and across the world. Through a dynamic year-long programme of activity we will celebrate our world-class events, festivals, artistic and cultural heritage.

This got me thinking, how I would showcase my own creativeness for the Year of Creative Scotland 2012, with so many artistic genres being shown I don’t quite know were my talents will fit in? For me the concept is what represents Scotland to you the individual and what you think others should be seeing from a Scottish creative. I have a great love for Scotland, which has grown through years of travelling with work up and down the country; I never get tired of what a stunning country we live in. Steeped in history and beauty which leaves us dramatic and amazing scenes around Scotland to visit and story’s to match. My love for history and fashion goes hand and hand and I have brought all of these together for the shoots. The locations, tell their own story as well as giving us some amazing back drops to show case our final looks.

Head Strong by name and nature there has always has been a bit the Scottish Warrior in me and I have always loved the Celtic Warrior look. This was my instant thought to recreate a warrior look, which comes in many concepts; these are the first in a series of shoots I will be creating throughout the year of 2012 with the Scottish theme in mind.

Miss Galaxy Scotland 2012, Jade Leigh Hunt was my first thought for this shoot, having worked with Jade before, she is a total delight to work with, she always gives 110% and brings her own creativeness to every shoot I have worked on with her, a true team player and nothing daunts her.

I have been a wig fitter for over 20 years, manly to recreate a natural workable style for those with hair loss and want a customised hairpiece. Session styling I have more recently moved into and want to use some of those skills on these photo shoots.

Jade’s dark hair transformed into long blonde curls with dip dyed blue ends with a wig designed by Head Strong. Makeup artist Stephanie Kerr from Peaches and Paint made her a crystal mask designed in a Celtic knot design to compliment the blue in the hair and Celtic Scottish theme.

Work is easy even on the long hard days if you have a team of team players and that brings in other talents and their own touch and flare to your idea’s.  Working alongside Head Strong on every shoot is photographer  George M Monaghan and Makeup Artist Stephanie Kerr.

Keeping it in the family Karen my younger cousin has worked alongside me since a young age, now my right hand woman in my creative world. Here Karen and Lesley – Head Strong, are putting together the outfit for our shoot at Scone Palace.

Truly couldn’t have asked for a better day that we did on the day of shooting the Festival Warrior theme. One of the best days of the year so far, here is hoping every festival in Scotland had weather like that this year??

We arrived on time to Perth to get ourselves ready at Markus Eagleton family run shop Scottish Sporrans. We were using Markus designs in the final look for the Festival Warrior and going on to show case some of his bags with a slightly different look later that day

Festival Warrior – To celebrate the Scottish festival culture and fashion

The site of Scone Palace and the Stone of Destiny is one of most iconic sites in Scottish history.

Stone of Scone also known as the Stone of Destiny and often to referred to in England as The Coronation Stone used in the early coronations of Scottish Kings, In 1296 the Stone was captured by Edward I as spoils of war and taken to Westminster Abbey, where it was fitted into a wooden chair, known as King Edward's Chair, on which most subsequent English sovereigns have been crowned. It wasn’t returned to Scotland until 1996 on St Andrew’s day were it will remain until it’s needed for the next Coronation.

Sunday's Photoshoot - with two Lesley’s doing this shoot it was always going to go well…

With Model Lesley Elizabeth Clark and Myself Lesley Danielle Docherty on the shoot, well things were always going to go well with two Lesley’s on the shoot.

We had arranged in 2012 we do a shot together, Lesley contacted me to put forward the shoot due to other commitments, so with days to go I set about getting our shoot organized. With my Makeup artist Stephanie away to the beauty show in London I was on my own as far makeup concertinaed but reassured by Steph I could do it, I went about putting the mood board together for the shoot.

Model Lesley

Hair all preped and ready to brush out

Lesley wanted a shoot in the style of Top Shop’s 2012 collection – We went for the 1970’s afro look and makeup. Since we were going for the retro look we put together a few looks for the days shoot. A prefect model to showcase Rabbies Retro Vintage Fashions, I knew I had a shoot with Lesley coming up and I also knew she would look amazing in a pair of Rabbies Retro, Vintage inspired customised ripped jean shorts for summer 2012 collection from Rabbies Retro own customised fashions, along with vintage inspired and genuine vintage fashions.

My trusty team mate from the GLS Team, photographer George M Monaghan stepped in to my rescue, even coming off nightshift to meet up with on a cold damp Sunday early afternoon.

Next up was the venue but Sunday afternoon with only a few days to go it wasn’t looking hopeful but we are lucky to be in Glasgow and for fashion shoots we have the best streets ever!! The hardest thing is to choose what suits the best. So it was an outdoor shoot and not the best for our 1970’s afro hair-do as it was wet damp day and the fact it lasted all day is my second miracle of the weekend.

Got my bear coat from Santa and it sure has come in handy for the shoots and kept everyone warm during the cold outdoor winter shoots in 2012 …. Loving the contrast between the two Lesley’s on this one, Model Lesley looks super chilled and glam, Stylist Lesley looks worn out and a little bit Glasgow if you know what I mean lol

Here is a little taster of the shoot on Sunday. Follow Rabbies Retro blog and Rabbies Retro Facebook page .

A Weekend of Photo Shoots - Saterday's Shoot

Just had the most amazing weekend …

Working on photo shoots that I had planned for a while.  I just love it when a plan comes together and runs smoothly.  Well as smoothly as an outdoor shoot can be in Scotland in February.  My last three outdoor shoots have either been cancelled or been a total nightmare due to the weather, but not these, although models and crew were freezing their butts off.

My first shoot on Saturday was for model Ashleigh Greenwood and her own vision for her shoot;  My brief for hair - Ashleigh wanted her own version of the editorial wet hair look.

I captured some back scene shoots for you to have a look at how it all comes together on the day…

7.30am Start – Getting ready for model Ashleigh who was coming to my workshop to get her hair set in rollers.

8.30am -  Ashleigh arrives and we get her hair set and dried and set off for Glasgow

10.20am – We arrive outside the hotel and a miracle happens, we get a parking space right outside the hotel in Glasgow City Centre. On a Saturday morning this is a true miracle hahaha I am loving the thistles out side the hotel... So cool eh!

Getting Orginized for the shoot.

10.30 we meet up with
Make Up Artist - Kimberley Dewar & Photographer – Laura McKinnon and get ourselves set up for some beauty magic . Notice that Ashleigh has a plastic bag over her head of rollers, to keep her hair dry while going from car to hotel, who says modelling is Glam?? Lol

Ashleigh Greenwood and Kimberley Dewar

11.00am – Ashleigh in makeup and we start on the styling. First Make-up then I finish off the hair style.

11.30 – Makeup nearly finished some dark and moody eye's …. Time to get those rollers out

Think Ashleigh is loving this look

12.00pm – Hair and makeup finished, now time to get ready ?? well not coats and scarfs as you would imagine in this weather .. No … well I will let you see for yourself in the finished images… Oh the poor models….

While getting ready the chat turns to public transport at some point and the things you see while traveling on them, this is a photo of everyone watching the video of a girl eating her own hair ehhhhhhhh….   Lmao

The things we talk about?? The things we video???
Even stranger
Have a look at their faces and judge by yourself if they like what they seen? Lol

Meeting up with old friends, Ashleigh meets up with her pal Craig so I thought this was a prefect opportunity for a photo..

12.30pm - That’s us all ready and outside shooting ... Well some of us are, not me too cold … OMG no way lol and what are good pals for… (To help us out) Craig stepped into the cold to help Laura as her assistant and get some light into the situation.

Me and the Make-up artist felt sorry for Craig out there in the cold, so we wrapped him up in Kimberly’s mittens and my bear jacket.

Craig rocking the bear look

2.30pm - One final quick look and then am off to my other clients for the day .

10.00pm - Arrived home from a very long day, but I had a brill day and night, then turned on my Facebook and Laura had posted us a few taster shoots, Have a look on Laura site for more information and some amazing images at   www.lauramckinnon.co.uk
